About Spelling Bee

A classic spelling bee challenge where a word is spoken aloud and you must type the correct spelling. The game uses your browser's built-in Text-to-Speech (Web Speech API) to pronounce each word naturally. Words are organized into three difficulty levels - Easy (5-letter common words), Medium (7-letter words), and Hard (10+ letter challenging vocabulary).

Controls

  • 🔊 Hear the Word button - Play the audio pronunciation (can be pressed multiple times at no cost)
  • Type in the input box - Enter your spelling of the word
  • Enter / Submit button - Check your spelling
  • 💡 Show Hint button - Reveal the word's definition (costs 3 points)
  • ⏭ Skip button - Skip the current word (streak resets to 0)
  • → Next Word button - Appears after each answer to advance to the next word
  • Difficulty buttons - Switch between Easy, Medium, and Hard word lists

How to Play

  • Press "Hear the Word" to hear the audio pronunciation of the hidden word.
  • Type your spelling in the input box and press Enter or Submit.
  • The number of letters is always shown as a guide.
  • A correct spelling earns 5 pts (Easy), 10 pts (Medium), or 20 pts (Hard).
  • Using the hint deducts 3 points from your score for that word.
  • Your best score is saved locally per session.

Frequently Asked Questions

The word is spoken aloud using the browser's Web Speech API text-to-speech. Make sure your device audio is not muted. Click the speaker icon to replay the word.
Some difficulty levels include a "Use in a sentence" button that reads a sample sentence containing the word - just like in a real spelling bee competition.
